Jiaxing is situated in the northeast of Zhejiang, bordering Shanghai to the east, Hangzhou to the west, Suzhou to the north and Hangzhou Bay to the south. With exceptional natural resources, Jiaxing is known as “the Land of Fish and Rice” and “the Home of Silk”.
Jiaxing has a long marvelous history. In the Neolithic Age, its prehistoric ancestors cultivated the great Majiabang Culture (6,000 or 7,000 years ago), one of the direct sources of ancient Chinese civilization. It was said that at one time there were seven pagodas and eight temples in the city; some have been lost to time and some have remained.
The water scenery of Jiaxing is quite unique and marvelous. The myriad rivers and waterways crisscrossing, the whole city was divided into sections. The ancient Wuzhen and Xitang towns display the prosperous water town culture of southern China. Together with Nanxun and a number of Jiangsu's water towns, Wuzhen received a UNESCO Asian-Pacific Heritage Award for its preservation of traditional architecture.
The South Lake, the Nanbei Lake and the Donghu Lake are the three most famous lakes in Jiaxing. The South Lake is known as “a place of graceful water and bird-watching”. The renowned Qiantang River tidal bore is an essential part of Jiaxing’s tourism. The Qiantang River Tidal Bore Festival is held every August 15thon the Chinese lunar calendar in the town of Yanguan.
