Introduction
Located in the Chuanyan Nineteen Peaks Scenic Area, Chongyang Temple is 20 kilometers west of Xinchang. It hides in the Guizhu Valley surrounded by rolling mountains and limpid creeks. In history, the place was frequented by eminent Taoists and that’s why it’s reputed as the Taoist Wonderland of Eastern Zhejiang.
Taoists believe that shang is yang, xia is yin, qing is yang and zhuo is yin. Shang and qing are both yang so that they are called as Chongyang (double yang). In the early Kaiyuan years (713-741) of the Tang Dynasty, Wuyun, the twelfth successor of Shangqing Taoism and a famous Taoist, built the Chongyang thatched cottage in the Guizhu Valley and lived in seclusion together with Li Bai, the fifteenth successor of Shangqing Taoism and the poetic genius. It’s regarded as the tenth Fairyland and named as “Kuaiji Cave” by the Taoism. In the ninth year of Kaiyuan period, the twelfth successor of Shangqing Taoism, Ma Chengzhen, was called to be an official. He visited Wu Yun on the way, as a result, he immediately regretted his decision and grudged to leave. According to legends, the historical relics such as the Regret Bridge and Regret Mountain originated from this and called as the sixtieth blessed land.
At the beginning of the new century, in order to develop and inherit the Taoist culture, Chongyang Temple was rebuilt on the site of the thatched cottage. It’s really wonderful to make this "heavenly abode" reshow the mysterious scenery of the blessed land. It’s divided into four parts, the "Psychic Wonderland", "Taiqing Temple", "Moon Lord Temple" and "Taoist Culture Health Garden". By virtue of the elegant surrounding mountains and rivers and the long history and profound culture of Taoism, it has become a new religious tourist attraction as well as the Giant Buddhist Temple in Xinchang County.
